In January we have Casey Hawthorne comparing the merits of some of the newer programming languages such as Haskell, Python, and Ruby.

Since many of us are still in holiday mode this meeting will be rather less formal than usual. Our speaker hasn't given us any more details on his presentation so let's be open to some general discussion about what's great and not-so-great about the currently available programming languages and environments. After the discussion winds down enough we'll have our usual round-the-room introductions and then open the floor for networking.

Lots of goodies packed into Ruby e.g. code blocks, open classes, built-in syntax for lists and maps, markup, regular expressions, ranges, and much much more. Interested in more? Join us for Vancouver's 1st RubyCamp @ WorkSpace on January 26th, 2008 More @ http://rubycamp.wordpress.c...

From my perspective even Java is a "new" language. My grounding was in Pascal, FORTRAN, LISP, PROLOG, various things called BASIC, and machine and assembly languages. And I agree that a presentation on Common Lisp would be cool. Thanks, I'll what I can do.

Thanks Sohail, I stand corrected. I'm keen to find out more about about Haskell and the other new languages.

Who attended?

    •  I was expecting a brief comparison of Haskell, Python and Ruby as the title implied, yet the presenter was great and I enjoyed his mastery of Haskell.
    •  There was plenty of energy, cool people. I really enjoyed tonight.
    •  Presentation was interesting but too long and did not talk about several languages as billed.

Well-done. Presenter sort of lost the lot of us after the first 30 minutes or so, but beyond that it was a great networking event.
    •  We relaxed our procedures a little for this event and ended up with something both unexpected and very high energy. Thanks go to Cassey for an intensive 50 minute crash course in Haskel. My head spun but I really got a feel for the language. Many participant expectations were not met, especially for Ruby enthusiasts, but the ensuing discussion was so high energy that we still had 30+ people in conversation while we were trying to close up. Thanks to everyone for their contributions.
    •  I have a feel for Haskell now.. but like most programming chores it might have been better to fit the features to the schedule and perhaps give more of an overview of the strengths (and weaknesses). Still, it resulted in an interesting discussion.
    •  discussions of Haskell went way over my head no coverage on promised topic, Ruby anyway still got to meet a lot of like minded developers.
    •  The speaker forgot the the theme of the meeting - discussion of programing languages
    •  Very much enjoyed the meeting - but would have preferred more of a comparison of the various languages.
