Meeting Description

Details

In April we have a presentation by Gerald Bauer on microformats, a web-site markup practice that supports better automated processing of existing data by attaching semantic tags. Join us as Gerald shows us what microformats are and what's being done with them. Following the presentation we'll have a door prize draw, round-the-room introductions, and then open networking. This is a networking event so bring your business/contact cards and a story or two to share.

About the Presentation:

What are Microformats? Microformats (see microformats.org) let you turn your web page into a web service using nothing more than simple coding conventions and patterns that work in today's browsers with today's markup. If you markup events, people, reviews, locations and more in your web page using Microformats you contribute to the next version of the web -- known as the Semantic Web, Web 3.0, or the Giant Global Graph (GGG).

In the mini Microformats talk learn more how you can add more semantics to your web site and enable Semantic Web/Web.3.0-style mashups such as "Add event to Google Calendar", "Find location with Google Maps", "Find photos on Flickr", "Find bookmarks on del.icio.us" and much more.

About the Speaker:

Gerald has more than ten years of professional experience in the information industry as developer, team lead, and trainer and has worked for Google, Apple, Siemens, the French Embassy and others in Canada, the United States and Austria.

Gerald holds a Master's Degree in social and economic sciences from the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, Austria and was chosen for the International Management Program at New York University's Stern Business School.

Gerald eats, works and sleeps in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada and blogs @ http://geraldbauer.wo...

I like using Mediawiki because it incorporates search functionality, but it would be even more useful to be able to add results from my FTP site and other project sites. I wonder how dissicult it would be to integrate it within Wediawiki or Mediawiki within it.
