-- PRESENTATION 7pm Thursday June 14: Building Data-driven Applications with PHP and MySQL using Dataface
In June Steve Hannah of SFU is presenting on using Dataface, an application generator for MySQL. It generates the forms, lists, and menus for a user to interact with the database without having to know any SQL (structured query language). Following the presentation we'll have round-the-room introductions, and then open the floor for networking.

http://softwaredev.meetup.com/17/calendar/5661067/-- SUMMER BREAK: No VanDev event in July
Summer holidays are coming and we're going to take a break in July. We plan to resume our monthly events in August.
-- CALL FOR SPEAKERS: We're lining up speakers for August thru December:
If you or someone that you know has something interesting to share with us then let us know. We generally run one event per month and we look for a short (about 20 minute) presentations to kick off the meeting. Speaking experience is not necessary and we can help you to prepare your presentation. Former VanDev speakers are invited to return. Ask for a copy of our Speakers Guide for more details. We generally get our room booking 2 to 8 weeks in advance so feel free to volunteer for a month before we know the meeting date.
-- MAILING LIST POLICY: Guidelines for posting to our new mailing list
Meetup.com has replaced our message board with a mailing list. With the message board you could subscribe to particular discussions or threads but with the mailing list it's all or nothing. The mailing list is optional and if you choose to not join it you will still receive automatic event announcements and special postings (like this one) from the organizers. So what do we want to do with the mailing list?
To start with here are some initial guidelines:
1) NO JOB POSTINGS. VanDev has a broad membership and any job posting, whether seeker or employer, would be of interest to a small percentage of us at best and noise for the rest. Instead please use the Van2-Jobs list at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/van2-jobs/ .
2) KEEP IT PROFESSIONAL: Personal attacks of any form will not be tolerated.
3) DISCUSSION ORIENTED: We're a networking group and any topic that gets us thinking and talking is perfect for our mailing list. Let's just remember to keep it professional.
4) ANNOUNCEMENTS: Announcements that would be of interest to our membership as a whole are welcome. Currently this will be a purely subjective judgement on the part of our moderators but over time we can develop a more detailed policy.
5) MODERATED: Until our list matures or new services allow for other options we're going to moderate the postings. Unfortunately it's currently all-or-nothing so if we disable moderation we can't block any postings, even from drive-by spammers who sign up, shoot, and leave. Moderating a list means that we don't see a posting until a moderator has approved it so this slows things down significantly. If you would like to help to review postings then let us know and we'll get you set up.
So there you are. Your comments on this policy are welcome and the mailing list would be a good place to bring them up. To sign up or change your settings go to
http://www.meetup.com/account/?tab=comm or click on Account at the top and then select the Membership and Communications tab.
-- O'REILLY NEWSLETTER: Check out the latest titles and more
O'Reilly gave us a newsletter in HTML format this time. Check it our for new titles, upcoming events, and special offers.
http://www.vcn.bc.ca/vandev/oreilly-newsletter.htm-- ACM CHAPTER UPDATE: Lot's of talk and a little action
Since our special meeting last November not a lot has happened on the ACM Chapter front. My apologies for that. It's been a busy winter.
Susan has set up a CMS-based website for us to use at
http://www.vandev.vcn.bc.ca/ and now we need to start populating it. The plan is to incorporate both as a BC Society and as an ACM Chapter. We're going to need to combine the requirements of each as we develop a constitution and bylaws. Stay tuned.
-- THANKS TO OUR VOLUNTEERS AND SPONSORS
