With respect to sensors, navigation, etc. I mentioned looking at robotics resources. While some of the techniques (like dead reckoning, odometry, etc.) don’t apply in the context of mobile phones I think you will find some of the information in the following paper useful. Although a bit dated, this paper does provide a good tour of sensors, methods, issues, etc.
